MLB Rumors: How will the Phillies replace Rhys Hoskins?
Rhys Hoskins won’t be easily replace by the Phillies, as the team is already without Bryce Harper for half the season. Hoskins power — especially in the postseason — was on full display. He turned a corner, and as a player who had been through the worst of times in the City of Brotherly Love, it was a long time coming.
Sadly, Hoskins suffered a torn Achilles. It’s unclear just how severe that tear is, but it’s safe to assume he’s out long-term. Of course, Philadelphia could seek a replacement via trade or free agency. The options on the open market are…not great. Miguel Sano is likely the best of the bunch. As for the trade market,
FanSided’s Tim Boyle
laid out a few possible partners, such as Garrett Cooper, Seth Brown and Darin Ruf.
In terms of an in-house replacement, expect the Phils to turn to Darick Hall for now. Dave Dombrowski flaunted how much he liked Hall as a player. The 27-year-old should receive the majority of playing time at first to start the year, though.
“We have not made that decision yet. He’ll get the majority of playing time, but the majority of playing time we face righties. But I don’t know what we’re going to do in that regard. We haven’t discussed that part of it yet,” Dombrowski added.
A by-committee approach is the smart play for now.

MLB Rumors: Dansby Swanson won’t feel pressure with Cubs

I’m not sure I buy this one.

While Dansby Swanson has dealt with pressure situations before — including winning a World Series in 2021 with the Atlanta Braves — performing up to the level of his $177 million contract in a new city brings with it an increased emphasis on success.

Swanson cannot regress to the mean at the plate. he must perform up to the level of his 2022 season, in which he made his first All-Star team and slashed .277/.329/.447 with a .776 OPS. Baseball-reference and FanGraphs project a step back.

Dansby admitted that he needs to “find his spots in Chicago.” David Ross isn’t worried about Swanson one bit.

“He knows himself really well,” <a href=https://fansided.com/2023/03/24/mlb-rumors-rhys-hoskins-max-fried/"https://www.mlb.com/news/dansby-swanson-feels-no-extra-pressure-in-first-cubs-season">Ross said. “He knows what it takes to win and, if you really look at his journey, there’s been some ups and downs of success and failures to lead him to this point in his life. So he feels very comfortable in his own skin. He’s very vocal about what he does well and the things he needs to prepare to be ready to play.”

Swanson’s used to pressure. But Atlanta pressure is different than Chicago pressure. The media market is sure to bring that out of him, whether he likes it or not.

“Contract or not, I’ve always had a pressure on myself to perform,” Swanson said. “No one’s standards will outpace mine for myself and for our team, so the contract part is not something I really look at in terms of that kind of pressure. That’s just not me.”

We’ll just have to wait and see.

MLB Rumors: How much will Braves pay Max Fried?

The Atlanta Braves named Max Fried their Opening Day starter on Friday. While that wasn’t much of a surprise to those who follow the team, it is alarming that Fried still doesn’t have a new deal.

Fried is likely next man up for a major contract extension, assuming Alex Anthopoulos wants to keep him around. The Braves have let Freddie Freeman and Dansby Swanson leave in back-to-back offseasons. Will Fried be next?

<a href=https://fansided.com/2023/03/24/mlb-rumors-rhys-hoskins-max-fried/"https://theathletic.com/4298955/2023/03/15/mlb-extension-week-pitchers/">The Athletic projects Fried will receive a four-year deal at around $28 million per season. That’s respectable, especially since Fried is on the right side of 30. This is his chance to land a large deal. Fried doesn’t offer the same pitch velocity as, say, a Max Scherzer, but he’s just as effective. Atlanta would be dumb to waste that.

What else can fans expect prior to Opening Day? The Braves surprisingly sent down shortstop Vaughn Grissom. While they’re expected to stick with Orlando Arcia, <a href=https://fansided.com/2023/03/24/mlb-rumors-rhys-hoskins-max-fried/"https://fansided.com/2023/03/22/braves-rumors-alan-trejo-trade/">FanSided’s Kevin Henry thinks a trade for Rockies shortstop Alan Trejo makes a lot of sense for both sides.
